How do you securely send money (cash) from the US to someone in South Africa?

send securely
Good Samaritan asked:

As far as I can tell, Western Union doesn’t have an office there and I need to send money to a friend there who was just in a bus accident. And he doesn’t have a bank account.

I am a South African so send it to me and I’ll pass it on to him. e-mail me for details of my account lol.

Seriously though – go to your bank and ask about a SWIFT or Tele-Transmission (TT) payment to South Africa to pay: “on application and identification”in SA. You will need to supply your friend’s passport or other identification details so the bank in SA can identify him.

Check where your friend is and your bank should send it to the bank branch nearest him. He’ll have to get to the branch to get the money.

The Big 4 SA Banks, are:
    ABSA
    Nedbank
    FNB
    Standard Bank

All will charge roughly the same commission and the process should take 3 days.

If he had a bank account in South Africa I would say go to your bank and transfer it to his South African bank account. Well, if there are Rennies Travel or Thomas Cook offices in US, go there. They are sure going to help you.

I think that Western Union would be the best. It takes some money to send, but it’s safe. Good luck, Cat

Why don’t you post him a cheque. My husband was written a cheque by an American, and he put it into his bank account no problem. (I think you Americans write it “check”)
