What’s the best (most humane/comfortable) way to send my 6-week-old cat from Beijing to USA? ?

send securely
Coretana asked:

I have a cat that I rescued here in China: He is 6 weeks old (estimate) and appears to be in great health (eats/excretes/sleeps/plays/etc). We are taking him to the vet to be checked out tomorrow to make sure he is ok and get him all the necessary shots. The problem I have is getting him back to the USA. I will be traveling for a few more months, so it’s not an option to keep him with me until I leave and i have someone who can get him from LAX and take care of him. I have emailed multiple companies who claim to be able to transport a pet safely and securely, but I am not sure their assurances cover young kittens or even if they’re legitimate. They say that they keep the animals in the “pressurized and temperature-regulated” cargo holds in the planes, but these areas are not 100% reliable and I would be heartbroken if anything happened to the little guy. Can anyone offer some suggestions, advice or recommendations?

animals generally have to be at least 3 months old to travel into the country.i would even find out first if you are allowed to import your cat. i think he’s too young

see the USDA veternary page import/export

get him on a passenger airline. They would reach LA at the soonest possible time and choose the non-stop flights. The flight attendants would see to your kitty and he would be placed inside a small but comfortable cage inside the compartments. I once transported my pug from London to Cebu stopping in Hong Kong. My little dog so far, survived the flight and had no complications after. And make sure to give the courier food. You don’t want your cat to starve.

    Hope this helps.

Give United Airlies air freight a call. UA has non-stop service from China to the USA and can take animals. Probably so can Northwest. There are freight forwarders that can do the job as well. The cargo holds of passenger aircraft are no problem for animals. They are pressurized and heated.

You should also check with the American Consulate for rule on cats into the USA. That might be a bigger barrier than the airline.

Also, be prepared to write a large check.
