Would you send your credit card information in an e-mail if the recipient has a secure server?

secure send
Jimmy Wayne Yang asked:

I’m trying to make a payment for some services from a reputable business, but they said to e-mail them my credit info and that they had a secure server so it would be safe. However, logic tells me this isn’t really a good idea. So what should I do?
Well I hear the phone isn’t safe to give out this information either. Also there were other options given, but I was just wondering why this was one of them.

I would not ever email my entire credit card number: maybe you could email a couple numbers at a time in several different emails? That way, if one was intercepted, they wouldn’t have the whole number.

There’s no way you can call them and give them the number that way?

Well, you can send me your whole band account info as well.

No. Don’t do that. It’s very suspicious that they want e-mail for that of all things.

If you are sending email, it is NOT secure, unless you have exchanged public / private Keys with the individual you are sending to. Did they send you a public key file to import into your email client? Probably not, and this is the ONLY way email would be secure.

Only web sites, over https, are secure.
If this person has told you to email your stuff, and it’s “secure”, they are LYING to you. It is not, it would be very easy to intercept this info, or for someone to even read it on your or their machine at a later date.

Sound like the person telling you this is confused and things because they have a secure web site for taking CC orders, that this some how relates to email. Stupid mistake.
Even if they encrypt their whole email server, you still have the link from your computer, across the whole Internet before it makes it there to worry about. Believe me, it’s NOT secure then. I highly doubt this person knows what they are talking about. I’d bring it to the attention of their supervisor.

    No,

Do not send credit cards through e-mail *ever*

No reputable business in the World would ever request credit card numbers through e-mail if they told you to send your number that way it’s a total scam.
